Drs. Mark Molitch and Susan H. Hou are co-recipients of the 2018 American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Excellence in Humanities and Medical Ethics Award, which is presented to an individual or individuals  who demonstrated exemplary and continuing education to upholding the highest principles of medical ethics and standards for the betterment of the public’s health or who has demonstrated devotion to these principles through their work in the humanities or creative arts. Drs. Molitch and Hou are scheduled to receive their awards on Friday, May 19, 2018, during the 27th AACE Annual Scientific & Clinical Congress in Boston.

Dr. Molitch is the Martha Leland Sherwin Professor of Medicine in the Endocrinology Division at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and Dr. Susan Hou is Professor of Medicine in the Nephrology and Transplant Divisions at the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois.

While both are active academic clinicians at their institutions, they opened the Centro Medico Humberto Parra, a clinic providing free medical care to indigent people in the rain forest of Bolivia in 2001 that has provided care to more than 50,000 patients thus far. Medical students and residents from Loyola, Northwestern and other U.S. institutions and even abroad, have done accredited international health rotations at the free clinic, supported entirely by private donations and modest donations from Loyola, with approximately three-quarters of the costs provided by Drs. Molitch and Hou.
