"AACE looks forward to working with a broad coalition of interested parties in formulating a cost efficient model of care for effectively addressing this important health issue."

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) announced today that it will convene a consensus conference on obesity: Building an Evidence Base for Comprehensive Action, March 23-25, 2014, in Washington, DC.

The AACE Board of Directors declared obesity as a disease state in July 2011, and AACE was the primary sponsor of the resolution adopted by the American Medical Association House of Delegates in June 2013, officially recognizing obesity as a disease.

AACE President, Dr. Jeffrey I. Mechanick, comments, “The time is right to address obesity head-on and devise a plan to treat the disease.  We need a new paradigm for attacking the worldwide epidemic of obesity.”

AACE will bring together national and international authorities and visionaries with the goal of achieving consensus for the immediate creation and publication of a statement that will provide the framework for developing a new disease state model for the treatment of obesity.

The conference will derive input from all relevant major stakeholders in the obesity battle including the physician community, public health experts, government policy makers, health care companies, medical research and educational communities, related medical societies and associations, pharmaceutical companies, and others.

Mechanick states, “AACE looks forward to working with a broad coalition of interested parties in formulating a cost efficient model of care for effectively addressing this important health issue.”
