San Diego Physician Receives Award from Professional Medical College

SAN DIEGO—APRIL 18, 2011— Steven V. Edelman, MD, was presented the Distinction in Clinical Endocrinology Award by the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) at its Convocation during the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) 20th Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress in San Diego, on Saturday, April 16, 2011. 
 
The Distinction in Clinical Endocrinology Award is given annually to a member of AACE in recognition of advancing the understanding of endocrinology through research and education. Dr. Edelman was nominated to receive this award because of his enthusiastic leadership in the field of endocrinology and his distinguished accomplishments as a clinical endocrinologist.
 
“I am honored and humbled to receive this award as there are so many dedicated individuals who have also dedicated their careers to advancing the field of  endocrinology,” said Dr. Edelman. “I thank AACE for this recognition and also for all it has done to draw more attention to the needs for improving medical care for individuals with endocrine disorders.”
 
Dr. Edelman is a professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System of San Diego and the director of the Diabetes Care Clinic, VA Medical Center. He achieved high honors during his undergraduate studies at the University of California at Los Angeles and was the valedictorian of his medical school class at the University of California Davis Medical School. Dr. Edelman received his internal medicine training at the University of California Los Angeles, and completed his endocrinology fellowship training at the Joslin and Lahey Clinics in Boston, MA, as well as a research fellowship at UCSD.
 
Dr. Edelman has written more than 200 articles and five books. He has won numerous awards for teaching and humanitarianism and was recognized by San Diego Magazine as a Top Doctor seven of the last eight years, an honor only achieved by a handful of physicians. Dr. Edelman was the first physician to be recognized by the American Diabetes Association as the Diabetes Educator of the Year in 2009. Dr. Edelman was chosen as the teacher of the year amongst the more than 400 faculty members at UCSD numerous times.
