Local Physician Receives Award from Major Physician Organization

SAN DIEGO—April 18, 2011—Robert R. Henry, MD, was presented the Frontiers in Science Award by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) at its 20th Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress in San Diego, on Thursday, April 14, 2011.
 
The Frontiers in Science Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated exemplary contributions to their individual profession or area of expertise. Dr. Henry was selected to receive this award by AACE based on his many seminal discoveries and outstanding commitment to the field of diabetes research.
 
“It is my great pleasure to be selected for the prestigious Frontiers in Science Award by AACE,” said Dr. Henry. “To be so highly recognized for my research accomplishments by my peers is an honor that I cherish and am deeply appreciative of.”
 
Dr. Henry is Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Chief of the Section of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes, and Director of the Center for Metabolic Research at the VA Medical Center in San Diego. Over the past 25 years he has received more than 60 diabetes-related grants and awards, including those funded by the National Institutes of Health – NIDDK, American Diabetes Association, The Department of Veterans Affairs and numerous pharmaceutical grants. As a researcher, Dr. Henry has primarily focused on exploring insulin resistance in cellular systems, animal models, and in people with diabetes. He has published more than 300 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Henry’s current research interests involve the metabolic and cardiovascular effects of interactions between skeletal muscle and adipose tissue and defects of insulin signal transduction in these tissues of obese and type 2 diabetic patients.
