Hollywood, Florida Based Physician Elected Secretary of Major Physician Organization

SAN DIEGO — APRIL 18, 2011— R. Mack Harrell, MD, FACP, FACE, was elected Secretary of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) at its 20th Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress in San Diego, on Saturday, April 16, 2011.
“The future of medicine depends on maintaining the sanctity of the doctor/patient relationship,” Dr. Harrell said. “Our job at AACE is to make sure that legislative and regulatory actions as well as third party payors do not distort or destroy that relationship. It’s a daunting task for our organization and I feel privileged to serve.”
As secretary, Dr. Harrell will serve on the Association’s Executive Committee the Board of Directors. He will also serve on committees and task forces as appointed by the AACE president.
Dr. Mack Harrell received his postgraduate Internal Medicine training from 1979-1982 in Minneapolis/St. Paul at the University of Minnesota, and completed his Endocrinology Fellowship at Duke University from 1982-1985 where he specialized in Bone and Mineral Metabolism under Dr. Marc Drezner’s tutelage. After serving as a Duke Faculty member for one year, Dr. Harrell entered the private practice of Endocrinology in Jacksonville, Florida, at the Riverside Clinic, the oldest multispecialty group in Florida. Dr. Harrell has subsequently served as the first Chief of Endocrinology at the Fort Lauderdale-based Cleveland Clinic Florida (1991-1996) and is currently the only employed Endocrine physician with the North Broward Hospital District, a four hospital, 26 clinic, public hospital consortium serving the needs of the medically indigent in the greater Fort Lauderdale area. On June 1, 2011, Dr. Harrell will be joining the Memorial Health System in Hollywood, Florida, to found Memorial Integrative Endocrine Surgery in conjunction with his surgical partner, Dr. David N. Bimston.
Dr. Harrell joined AACE in 1991 and has served as an active member of the Legislative and Regulatory Committee & the Bylaws Committee, as well as the Chair of the Socioeconomics Committee for the past eight years. He has lobbied actively in Washington, DC, for AACE-related causes since 2002.
